Accelerating quickly to retain a position to block the shot
Description
In this session we are focusing on our players ability to accelerate quickly to cover the ground to retain a position to block the shot. The drill begins with the players diagonally opposite each other, with one player in possession of the ball. On the coaches instruction, the players travel around two sides of the square, with the defender moving to defend the goal, and the attacker moving to shoot. As the attacker brings the ball round the second corner and into the middle they look to shoot straight away, with the defender aiming to cover the ground quickly to retain a position which covers the goal, enabling a better chance of blocking the shot. The players then start from the opposite side, so the attacker uses their other foot and the defender looks to defend off both sides. Each set should consist of 4 - 6 reps and should be completed at least three times per player.
