Stepping & dropping movements

Description

In this session we are focusing on our players ability to step towards the ball, and to drop below the ball. The drill begins with the coach playing the ball into the player for a 1 - 2. The player then looks to step in to get close to the pole/cone, which replicates an attacking player. Once the player has stepped in, they look to transition quickly to receive the ball on the outside of either of the wide poles. They look to take the ball across the body and pass to the coach, who moves either side of the pole which provides two different options and ensures the player must get their head up before passing. We then bring in the dropping movement, as the player back pedals beyond the deepest pole, before moving around to attack a header. The most important factor for the player to remember is to always be able to see the ball, ensuring they open their body out when moving backwards and are always scanning their surroundings. Each set should consist of 4 - 8 reps and should be completed at least three times.
